Merthyr Town, preparing to return to the Pitching In Southern Football League Premier Division South in 2021/22, have announced the appointment of Steve Williams as their new assistant manager.

The former club captain joins recently appointed manager Dean Clarke’s new coaching staff ahead of the new season.

The former right-back made 412 appearances for The Martyrs, scoring 19 goals.

Williams first joined the club in the summer of 2004 after being picked up by manager John Relish, following a recent outing at Penydarren Park with Newport County the season before.

Following his transfer to the club, he made his first-team debut as a 19-year-old.

The former Cardiff City YTS player, held the honour of being crowned the first-ever club captain of the newly formed Merthyr Town FC in 2010 and led the club to two consecutive championships in the Toolstation Western League and almost made it a treble the year after but defeat in the Southern League play-off final to Hungerford Town dampened the club's hope of achieving the unthinkable.

Throughout his playing career at Merthyr, he played at right-back or wing-back but has shown his versatility in past seasons by playing at both centre and left-back as well as a short stint in midfield.

Since retiring as a player, Williams has since took over coaching roles at both Welsh League clubs – Cambrian & Clydach and Taffs Well - and he will now be hoping to add his managerial experience to his new role at his home-town club.

Manager Dean Clarke told https://www.merthyrtownfc.co.uk: “It’s fantastic to get Steve announced as assistant manager and to welcome him back to the club. Steve is a stalwart at the club with an incredible number of appearances for Merthyr, to show for it. I spent the majority of my playing career at the club alongside Willo, and his commitment and dedication to the game has followed him into his coaching.

“With his recent experience of coaching within the Welsh League system with Cambrian & Clydach and Taffs Well, I’m hoping we can use him to help with the recruitment of young and upcoming players that are in the Welsh league. Steve’s experience of playing throughout the non-league system will prove essential to ensuring we get the most out of our squad”.
