Pitching In Southern Football League Division One South club Sholing have announced their first new signing of the close season to date.

Despite manager Dave Diaper seemingly being content with the majority of the squad already at The Mackoy Stadium, he has added centre-back Mitchell Byrne to his group.

The 20-year-old originally joined Sholing`s league rivals AFC Totton on dual registration with Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier side Team Solent in 2018/19. But after playing two games for the club, the then-17-year-old suffered a nasty injury that kept him out of football for six months.

After returning to fitness, he signed permanently for the Stags at the start of 2019/20.

Meanwhile, record appearance holder Marvin McLean has become the latest to put pen-to-paper for the Boatmen for 2021/22.

The 33-year-old has played 697 games for Sholing – which would have been many more but for the pandemic – as he surpassed 650 appearances back in August 2019.

He famously scored the winning goal at Wembley in the FA Vase Final in 2014.
