Making his debut for Farnborough in last Saturday`s goalless draw with Walton Casuals in the first game of the new Pitching In Southern Football League Premier Division South season was experienced forward Ricky Holmes.

The 34-year-old, usually deployed as a winger or striker, is well known throughout the Football League, predominantly for his time with Barnet, Portsmouth, Northampton Town, Charlton Athletic, Sheffield United and most recently Southend United.

The experienced attacker has made around 300 appearances in the EFL, scoring well over 100 goals during that time, and also won an England C international cap in 2008 when at Chelmsford City.

Manager Spencer Day told his club`s website: "That's been about three weeks hard work! Literally the paperwork went in 10 minutes before the deadline on Saturday.

"We've profited from the basis that he's going part-time. Obviously, we're very excited.

"We've shown now by the three or four exciting signings that we've made - to compliment the vast majority of last year - that we can be a very exciting side and we're only going to get better."

Day has also signed Farnborough-born midfielder James Whiting after he had returned to the country.

The 20-year-old started out on League One Portsmouth`s books as a 9-year-old, penning a scholarship deal in the summer of 2017.

After being a regular in Pompey`s under-18 side, he was released at the end of the 2018/19 season and moved to Finland to join Pallo-Iirot in the Kakkonen League - the second tier in Finland.
