Coup Signing By Wantage

Pitching In Southern League Division One Central club Wantage Town pulled off a bit of a coup with the signing of Alex Henshall ahead of their trip to St Neots Town on Saturday.

Henshall, who made his debut in the 2-1 defeat at the Premier Plus Stadium, had been a free agent since leaving Southern Premier Division Central side Banbury United in the summer.

The 27-year-old began his career at home-town club Swindon Town and turned down approaches from Manchester United and Liverpool in order to sign for Manchester City.

After loan spells at Chesterfield, Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town, the pacey winger joined the Tractor Boys in 2014 on a permanent basis.

A move north of the border to Kilmarnock was followed by spells in non-League football with Margate, Braintree Town and then Nuneaton Borough, where he met up with then-manager Tommy Wright, who he followed to Darlington in the summer of 2018.

He made 26 appearances for the Quakers but returned to Nuneaton in June 2019 to be a little closer to his Wiltshire home and young family.

Henshall, who also played extensively in England’s Youth set-up, winning almost 20 caps and playing in two major tournaments, re-joined Nuneaton in June 2019 and then made a permanent switch to Southern Premier Division South side Swindon Supermarine in early January 2020 after a successful loan spell.

He moved to Southern Premier Division Central outfit Stratford Town in July 2020 and to another rival, Banbury, in late September 2020.
