Saturday`s Buildbase FA Trophy First Round Review

It`s fair to say it wasn`t the best of days for the Pitching In Southern Football League in Saturday`s Buildbase FA Trophy First Round ties!

Isthmian League North Division side Felixstowe & Walton United produced arguably the surprise result of the day in knocking out Premier Division Central leaders Peterborough Sports 2-1 at Dellwood Avenue.

A crowd of 441 saw the Turbines get off to a great start with a goal in the 5th minute from Ryan Fryatt.

The Seasiders equalised 12 minute later through Henry Barley and then scored what proved to be the winner 5 minutes into the second half from Zak Brown.

Causing upsets were Division One Central side Welwyn Garden City and Division One South outfit Plymouth Parkway.

The Citizens saw off Isthmian Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic 2-1 at Herns Lane.

The visitors were quickly out of the blocks and took a 7th-minute lead through Jordan Cheadle.

Jay Rolfe pulled Nick Ironton`s side back on level terms in the 21st minute.

And then a big turning point in the game arrived on 66 minutes when Carshalton had Dan Bennett sent-off for a challenge deemed a being reckless.

And City made the most of their extra man by winning it with a 75th minute Ben Spaul effort.

Parkway beat Premier Division South side Salisbury 4-0 at Bolitho Park.

The hosts led 1-0 at half-time, thanks to a 38th minute Rio Garside goal.

Ten minutes after the break, Billy Palfrey doubled the Devonians lead in spectacular fashion, shooting from fully 50 yards after spotting the keeper off his line.

Garside added his second of the game just past the hour-mark and a Mike Landricombe header in the 88th minute made it 4-0.

Victims of an upset were Salisbury`s league rivals Walton Casuals, who suffered a 6-2 hammering on their own Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub patch by Isthmian South Central side Uxbridge.

Adam Liddle gave the Stags a 28th-minute lead but the Reds scored twice in 3 minutes through Ezra Ndukuba and Mahlondo Martin to make it 2-1 by the 36th minute.

John Gilbert`s first goal for Casuals made it 2-2 in the 42nd minute, only for Ndukuba to notch his second to take the visitors into the break 3-2 ahead.

But in the second half, Juwon Akintunde`s 66th-minute penalty and again from open play on 79 minutes took the tie away from the hosts, who conceded a sixth to a Martin spot-kick in the 82nd minute and their misery was complete when Gilbert received his second yellow card near the end.

The league also lost Premier Division Central sides Biggleswade Town, Rushall Olympic, Nuneaton Borough, Royston Town, Bromsgrove Sporting and Banbury United.

Biggleswade were beaten 2-1 at Langford Road by Isthmian Premier outfit Enfield Town, whose Lyle Della-Verde bagged a brace in the 23rd and 73rd minutes, sandwiched by a 39th minute Matty Hall reply.

The Pics suffered a 4-0 Dales Lane drubbing by high flying Northern Premier League Premier Division visitors Matlock Town, for whom Liam Hughes after 41 minutes, Ryan Qualter 3 minutes later, Matthew Rhys Sargent on 73 minutes and Jesurun Uchegbulam 8 minutes from time were all on the mark.

Nuneaton lost 2-0 at Stainton Park to Matlock`s league rivals Radcliffe, for whom Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro and sub Luca Navarro netted in the final 8 minutes in front of 505.

Royston shared a 1-1 draw with Isthmian Premier side Kingstonian, former winners of the competition of course, but lost 4-3 on penalties.

Gus Sow put the K`s in front from the spot in the 23rd minute, with Dan Newton equalising 4 minutes into the second half.

Bromsgrove Sporting`s home tie at the Victoria Ground against Northern Premier League Premier Division side Morpeth Town also went all the way to penalties.

Neither side could find a goal in normal time but it was the North East visitors who triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out.

Banbury lost one of the ties of the round at the EasyAsHGV Stadium against Premier Division South leaders Farnborough.

In front of a crowd of 402, what turned out to be the only goal of the game came 2 minutes before half-time, courtesy of a Connor Roberts own goal.

Banbury`s hopes of getting back in the game took a massive blow when they had Jay Williams shown a straight red card in the 72nd minute for a reckless challenge.

Premier Division Central teams through are Needham Market, Tamworth, Leiston and Stourbridge.

The Marketmen enjoyed a best-of-five-goal thriller at Bloomfields against Isthmian Premier side Margate.

Goals from Harvey Sayer after 31 minutes and Ben Fowkes a minute before the break gave the hosts a 2-0 interval lead.

But sometimes that can be a dangerous lead and so it proved as Gate fought back to level through Vance Bola after 62 minutes and then Ben Greenhalgh in the 82nd minute.

There was late drama though as in the 3rd minute of stoppage time, sub Hand Mpongo headed Needham Market`s winner.

The Lambs avoided an upset at Holt House as they edged past Northern Premier League Division One West side Colne on penalties.

It finished 1-1 with both goals coming within 2 minutes of each other midway through the second half from Colne`s Ryan Taylor and then Tyrell Waite.

But it was the visitors who go into Monday`s draw, winning 4-3 on spot-kicks.

Leiston beat Premier Division South side Harrow Borough 3-0 at Victory Road with goals from Brendan Ocran after just 4 minutes and Will Davies just past the hour-mark and then again 7 minutes from the end.

The Glassboys avoided an upset by winning 2-1 at the Bill Stokeld Stadium against NPL Division One Midlands outfit Carlton Town.

But they had to come back from being a 41st minute Aaron Opoku goal down to win, thanks to a Montel Gibson brace in the 46th and then the 85th minutes.

Premier Division South clubs though are Wimborne Town, Tiverton Town and Hartley Wintney.

Wimborne turned league form upside down by winning 2-1 at the Optima Stadium against league rivals Weston-super-Mare.

Lewis Beale bagged a brace for the Magpies – one in either half – with Alfie Moulden equalising.

Tiverton came through a very tricky test at Isthmian South Central Bracknell Town to win 3-1.

After a goalless opening half, Nelson Iseguan gave the Devonians the lead 2 minutes after the restart and then Dan Hatfield made it 2-0 just past the hour-mark.

Sen Bowerman briefly gave the Robins hope with an 87th-minute replay, but a second for Iseguan in time added on made sure for the Yellows.

Tivvy`s Division One South neighours Willand Rovers were knocked out at Hartley Wintney.

Mitch Parker after 10 minutes, Kingsley Eshun in the 13th minute and then again from the spot 4 minutes later effectively killed off Rovers` hopes.

They had their hopes raised a bit when the Row had Jacques Kpohomouh dismissed for a second yellow card for a handball.

But they were unable to make inroads into the ten-men and the Row even had the luxury of a missed second-half penalty – Eshun`s effort being saved by Rovers` keeper George Burton.

Division One South sides through are AFC Totton and Larkhall Athletic – both after penalty shoot-outs.

The Stags beat league rivals Frome Town 4-2 on penalties after the sides shared a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Frome suffered a massive blow after just 11 minutes when they had James Carey shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have brought down Hisham Kasimu outside the area.

Manager Danny Greaves was forced to don the gloves and take his place between the sticks for the remainder of the game.

But the ten-man Robins managed to take the lead when Marcus Mapstone powerfully headed home a corner.

The lead lasted only a matter of minutes though as Sam Griffin pulled the Stags level.

It was the home side who found the next goal though, with Jack Hoey curled home a fabulous effort from the edge of the area.

Then, in the 70th minute, Marcus Mapstone was shown a second yellow card to leave Frome down to nine-men.

However, the nine men equalised with 10 minutes left through Jon Davies only to lose the shoot-out.

Larkhall earned a good win at Isthmian South Central side Marlow`s Alfred Davis Memorial Ground, also on penalties.

A brace from Nnamdi Nwachuku in the 15th and 22nd minutes for the hosts cancelled out Matt Britton`s 10th-minute opener for the Larks.

But a last-gasp Joe Hillard equaliser sent the tie into a shoot-out which the visitors took 6-5.

Bowing out are Cinderford Town and Hayes & Yeading United.

The Foresters were beaten 3-0 at Isthmian South Central side Binfield, whose Sean Moore bagged a brace in the 2nd and 28th minutes and then Callum Bunting added a third in time added on at the end of the game.

High flying Premier Division South club Hayes & Yeading are out, beaten 3-0 at the SKYex Community Stadium by Isthmian Premier leaders Worthing.

Goals just before and just after half-time from Arran Racine and Dayshonne Golding were added to by former Brighton favourite Dean Cox just shy of the hour-mark.

The tie between Division One Central club Bedford Town and Isthmian Premier Division side Potters Bar Town was abandoned right near the end.

It followed a fracas on the pitch before which Bedford`s Charley Sanders had been dismissed for a second yellow card on 75 minutes – all with the Scholars leading 1-0, courtesy of a 2nd minute Ben Ward-Cochrane effort.
