Sharpe Move to `Marine

Defender Tom Sharpe has left Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central side Banbury United to join Southern Premier Division South club Swindon Supermarine.

Sharpe, who turned 21 last month, signed for the Puritans in August after being released by Championship side West Bromwich Albion.

He joined the Baggies at the age of 8 and came through the ranks to sign a professional deal in the summer of 2020 after being with the under-18 and under-23s.

That was despite having to battle back from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament suffered in an FA Youth Cup tie against Lincoln City, which ruled him out of action for more than a year.

He was a defensive midfielder until 2017, when he was converted into a central defender, and he was made captain of his age group shortly before suffering his knee injury.

Tom`s dad was a skilful midfielder for Whaddon United and he still plays for Newton FC in Cheltenham League Division One, while his granddad Joey Cunneen runs Whaddon now, also in Division One of the Cheltenham League.
