The 39-year-old has appeared once this season between the posts for the Citizens, helping out when the regular number one Charlie Crowley was unavailable.
A vastly experienced keeper, Thompson has played in the Football League with Dagenham & Redbridge, where he understudied former Welsh international Tony Roberts for two seasons.
He joined the Daggers from Wingate & Finchley, where he was number one and also played for the sadly now defunct Thurrock.
His final club was Harlow Town, where he suffered a recurrence of a serious knee injury, that sadly ended his regular playing career.
City manager Nick Ironton said: “Ed was a fine goalkeeper in his full-time playing days and is a very knowledgeable and experienced coach. He will be a great asset in training our keepers’’.
