Merthyr Bring in Former Wales Under-21 International Midfielder

Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South club Merthyr Town have announced the signing of former Wales under-21 international midfielder Jack Evans.

Evans has joined the Martyrs for the remainder of the 2021/22 season after putting pen-to-paper.

The midfielder, who progressed through Championship side Swansea City’s academy ranks after joining them when he was 8, made a remarkable return to playing in 2019 following a battle against cancer.

In 2018, Evans was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma – a rare cancer that mainly affects adults in their early 20s and over 70s.

After missing a season to undergo chemotherapy, he made his senior debut for the Swans in August 2019 when he came on in their 6-0 victory over Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup, before joining League Two side Mansfield Town on loan in January 2020.

Evans, who also won caps for Wales at under-19 and under-20 level, spent the first half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Cypriot First Division outfit Pafos, where he made 2 appearances.

Following his return to the UK in January 2021, he joined League Two side Newport County, in a bid to add to the Exiles’ promotion hopes.

And, after a spell with JD Cymru Premier outfit Penybont, Evans has been training with the Martyrs for a number of weeks, and he completed his first 90 minutes for the club in a behind closed doors friendly this week.

He could be contention to make his debut when the Martyrs head to fellow strugglers Dorchester Town tomorrow.
