Hayes & Yeading Re-Claim Top Spot - Wimborne Are Relegated

The title race in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South is really boiling up for a fantastic finale after Hayes & Yeading United re-claimed top spot on Tuesday night after beating Salisbury.

Paul Hughes` men won 2-0 at the SKYex Community Stadium to move back to the summit on goal difference.

But only three points separate the top four with both Farnborough and Taunton Town, who play this evening, having played two games less than Hayes and Metropolitan Police.

After a fairly even first half at the SKYex, Hayes & Yeading finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when a great run from Francis Amartey was finished off by Moses Emmanuel.

Then, with 7 minutes remaining, the hosts made sure of three vital points when Amartey rounded Salisbury `keeper Patrick O’Flaherty to make it 2-0.

Yate Town improved their chances of making the top five when they beat Walton Casuals 3-0 at the Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub to move to within three points of fifth-placed Weston-super-Mare with two games in hand.

It took 38 minutes for the Bluebells to take the lead when, following some good hold up play by Sam Kamara following a cross from the left, Joe Tumelty fired home.

And then 3 minutes before the break, Olly Mehew volleyed number two from a Sam Turl cross.

Yate’s third goal 20 minutes from time was a bizarre own goal from Casuals` Jerry Wiltshire, who stretched for a ball but succeeded only in volleying it past his own keeper from fully 25 yards!

Tuesday’s other game saw Wimborne Town’s tenure in the Premier Division South come to an end after losing 4-1 at New Cuthbury to mid-table Harrow Borough.

Promoted in 2018, the Magpies have struggled all season and have only won three times to date.

Defeat number 28 came after they had taken a 13th-minute lead through Lewis Beale.

But Harrow equalised 6 minutes later with a goal from George Moore and were 3-1 up at the break, courtesy of Yasin Ben El-Mhanni’s brace in the 21st and 40th minutes.

Moore eventually added his second of the game to make it 4-1 on 66 minutes.
