Rene Howe - goal number 25
Unlike the replayed match at Tamworth, this one had little riding on the outcome apart from pride and the Eagles` attempt to extend their amazing unbeaten league run to 22 matches as the Oxfordshire hosts had already confirmed their safety for another season.
After a scrappy start at an empty ground - the game was ordered to be played behind closed doors – it was Bedford who opened the scoring after 20 minutes when a cross from Dan Walker was headed home by Rene Howe.
That was the experienced striker’s 25th goal of the season and took him level with AFC Dunstable’s BJ Christie with Harlow Town’s Alex Read and Biggleswade FC’s Alex Marsh one and two goals respectively behind them, making the race for the `golden boot` another interesting sideline on the final day of the regular season tomorrow.
Kidlington’s keeper Ben Mitchell made a couple of decent saves to keep the scoreline to one.
And that proved even more important as the hosts grabbed an equaliser in first-half injury-time when a free kick was tapped home at the far post by Jack White.
The second half saw Bedford have several opportunities to seal victory, but it ended all-square in the end.
Tomorrow will see Gary Setchell’s men receive the championship trophy and medals after the final game against Aylesbury United at The Eyrie.
