Defender Commits to Bideford

Reprieved Pitching In Southern League Division One South club Bideford AFC have announced that versatile defender Charlie Madden has committed to the Devonians for the 2023/24 season.

Madden played an important part in keeping the Robins in the Southern League at the end of last season, playing 10 games and scoring twice.

The 26-year-old joined Bideford in February 2023 from then-Southern Premier side Truro City.

He had moved to the White Tigers in March 2022 from league rivals Dorchester Town.

He had joined the Magpies in the summer of 2020 from another league rival, Weston-super-Mare, who he had signed for in June 2019 after completing a four-year scholarship in the USA.

The imposing 6`3” centre-back is also capable of playing in central midfield, came through the ranks with Exeter City and upon completing his scholarship was not offered a contract and left the Grecians in 2015.

He made the move to American university Franklin Pierce during the latter part of 2015.

He took up majoring in sports management while also taking a four-year scholarship with the team.

During his four years at the university, he made 40 appearances and scored 5 goals before returning to England and signing for the Seagulls.

Bideford’s long-serving manager Sean Joyce told his club’s website: “I’m really pleased that Charlie is staying with us. He’s a great addition who brings a lot of experience having played at a higher level for Truro and Dorchester, and did great for us in his 10 games last season”.
