Hill's Return Like Signing a New Player

Paul Michael, manager of Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South club Merthyr Town, has announced that Gethyn Hill has agreed terms ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Hill re-joined the Martyrs last summer but a serious knee injury led to him making just one league appearance during the 2022/23 campaign.

The 28-year-old forward helped Taunton Town to win the Southern Premier Division South title in 2021/22 after arriving in March 2020 from Merthyr before returning in August 2022.

He was released by Championship side Cardiff City after enduring an injury ravaged two years, which saw him tear his ACL and undergo five operations.

The former Wales under-19 international regained fitness at Christmas 2014 before being released the following March.

He was briefly with Welsh League side Goytre United but left after one game and took the rest of the season off before joining Cinderford Town in the summer of 2016.

He moved to Weston-super-Mare in December 2016 where he remained until joining Merthyr for the first time in 2019.

Michael told his club’s website: “It’s a cliche to say someone is `like a new signing`. However, Geth is like a new signing for us having missed all bar 7 minutes last season.

“I believe we missed Geth and his physical presence in both boxes last season, he will give us a different dimension to our game. He’s the kind of person that has done everything right in his treatment, his recovery and he’s experienced coming back from the other knee earlier in his career so I believe he will come back stronger once again.

“He’s looking at mid-to-late September for a competitive return at this point but at this stage of his rehabilitation that could still be pushed back or come forward slightly depending on progress. I can’t wait for him to step out at Penydarren Park again, hit the net and celebrate with the supporters, that’ll be a great moment for us and Geth”.
