Wright Move for Winchester

Pitching In Southern League Premier Division South club Winchester City have had a busy few days.

The Citizens have snapped up former England C striker Tommy Wright, who finished last season with AFC Totton.

The 26-year-old gained a place in then-Vanarama National League side Sutton United`s squad in 2016 after impressing in the pre-season friendlies, having previously played Hampshire Premier League football for Otterbourne.

He played for Salisbury in 2016/17 under dual-registration, scoring over 50 goals as they reached the Southern League play-offs, and transferred that form to the National League, scoring 19 league and cup goals, winning the young player of the year award, and earning his first England C cap in Ireland in May 2018.

He was also named in the squad to face Estonia in October 2018 but then suffered a knee injury kept him out for the rest of that season.

He transferred to National League South side Havant & Waterlooville in July 2020.

Four of last season’s squad have also penned new deals to stay with City.

Midfielder Max Smith, 23, originally signed for Winchester in the summer of 2019.

He started out with Alton Town and has also seen service with Petersfield Town, Gosport Borough and Moneyfieds.

Central midfielder Ollie Griggs returns having been with the Citizens since October 2022 after arriving from Dorchester Town in May 2022.

The 24-year-old had first signed for the Citizens in late September 2020 from Dorchester, where he had been since February 2020.

He originally made his debut for the club in January 2017 and made 33 appearances, and returned for a second spell with the Magpies having spent the past 12 months at Winchester.

He started his career with Vanarama National League side Eastleigh and whilst with the Spitfires, he had loan spells with Bridgwater Town and Wimborne Town.

Centre-back Callum Baughan has also committed for 2023/24.

The 23-year-old joined Winchester in late August 2022 from AFC Totton.

He had signed for the Stags in June 2021 from National League neighbours Eastleigh after being released by the Spitfires at the end of that season.

He possesses a wealth of experience at such a young age and signed his professional contract with Eastleigh in the summer of 2018, after graduating from the academy.

The versatile defender gained experience with a loan spell at Blackfield & Langley when they were members of the Southern League Division One South.

However, he has unfortunately been hit with injuries but has bounced back stronger and fitter than ever.

Young 18-year-old midfielder Henry Brooks has also penned a deal to remain with City.

He made his senior debut for Winchester away at Mangotsfield United in December 2021 having progressed from the youth set up.

He came off the bench that day, got an assist and a goal and has never looked back.

At the end of his breakthrough season, he signed a contract and has once again impressed.
