It's Now Rider for Rovers

Pitching In Southern League Division One Central club Barton Rovers look determined not to be embroiled in another battle against relegation in 2023/23 with another impressive new recruit heading to Sharpenhoe Road.

Rovers have announced the signing of striker Joe Rider, who bagged 18 goals in 22 games the last time he played at Southern Division One Central level.

The 20-year-old joins from St Neots Town, who were relegated to the United Counties League Premier Division South at the end of last season from the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands.

Rider had re-joined St Neots in July 2021 having been voted the Saints` under-18s players’ player of the year for 2018/19 after finishing as top scorer with over 30 goals.

That earned him a trial with League One side Cambridge United, who signed him on a two-year deal.

However, the towering centre forward was one of five young players released by the U`s at the end of May 2021.

Rovers have also seen five player from last season’s squad commit for the new campaign ahead.

Lewis Thomas is a hardworking, strong centre-back who joined Barton initially on loan from Biggleswade Town in August 2019 before making the move a more permanent one later in the season.

The 22-year-old was a product of the very successful Biggleswade youth programme.

Serhan Dogruer is a pacey and skilful midfielder who joined Rovers last season from Spartan South Midlands League side Crawley Green.

He was previously with The 61 FC and Potton United.

Ashton Grant, a midfielder with an eye for goal, has also put pen-to-paper for 2023/24.

The 26-year-old re-joined Rovers in March 2023 from Berkhamsted, where he had been since late October 2022 having spent the early part of the 2022/23 campaign back at former clubs Crawley Green and AFC Dunstable.

He had signed for Royston Town in September 2020 and then switched back to AFC Dunstable a month later.

He spent the 2019/20 season split between AFC and Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division outfit Biggleswade United.

He started out at Barton Rovers and has also been on the books at Crawley Green, Dunstable Town and Bedford Town.

Taylor Keely, a quick, versatile full back, has also committed.

The 19-year-old signed for Rovers in February 2023.

He was previously with Royston Town.

He came through the system at Garden Walk and represented the under-18s, under-23s and made a couple of first team appearances for the Crows.

And vastly experience Paul Andrews has penned a deal to take him into his sixteenth season with the club.

Andrews, now 37, has 391 games to his name since joining back in 2008 from Ampthill Town having come from Norfolk where he played for Diss Town and Fakenham Town.
