Kit donation brings joy to youngsters in Sri Lanka

Pitching In Southern League Division One Central club, Kings Langley, recently donated old playing kit to the KitAid Charity.

“We were delighted to see that the kit had made its way to Sri Lanka,” said a club spokesperson. “It’s gone to an orphanage over there and it really warms the heart to see the smiles on the faces of the children after they received the kit.”

KitAid is a charity that was set up by Derrick Williams MBE after he visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998.

Being a keen football fan, Derrick was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts.

It was during this trip that he decided to set up a charity to provide kit and equipment to the bare-footed youngsters playing with footballs made of tied string and plastic bags.

A quarter of a century later and KitAid has now sent out kits to adults and children in over 55 different countries across the world.

On the pitch, things have started well for the Hertfordshire-based club as they remain unbeaten in their opening five Division One Central games.

They return to action on Tuesday evening as they play host to Biggleswade Town.
