There is plenty to celebrate at Mickleover. Not only have they got a nine-game winning start in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central to shout about but also the emergence of some exciting young talent.
During Saturday’s 5-0 home victory over AFC Sudbury, 16 year-old striker, Sam Tomlinson, was handed his senior debut whilst 17 year-old Brandon Ferron also entered the action and weighed in with an assist and a generally assured display.
“Sam has been excellent for the youth team this season and deserved his opportunity,” said manager, John McGrath. “I’ve got my first-team coach, Pablo Mills, who is Head of the Academy and first-team player, Andrew Dales, who is an Academy coach so we are able to see at close quarters what is coming up through the ranks here.
“We are also safe in the knowledge that our young lads coming up through the ranks are getting exactly the same training as the first-team, so that helps in their transition.
“As I say, Sam has started the season brightly and scored some important goals for the youth team, so it was good to be able to give him his senior debut at 16 and also young Brandon [Ferron] came on and made a contribution.
“It just shows the pathway that we have created here over the years.”
Mickleover head to Barwell on Monday evening looking for their tenth straight League win.
