KEMPSTON ROVERS | UP AND RUNNING

The Walnut Boys have cracked it with first win of season

There was joy for Kempston Rovers on Saturday as they tasted victory for the first time in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central at the ninth time of asking courtesy of a good 3-1 triumph at Leighton Town.

It was the perfect way for Richard Keil to celebrate his first game in permanent charge after a spell as interim manager which saw plenty of progress made for The Walnut Boys.

“Leighton is always a difficult place to go to and they are a good side,” Keil told The Non-League Show. “But we’ve built a group of players here over the past three or four weeks that is capable of winning matches and, to be honest, this result has been coming.

“Training was great on the Thursday prior to the game and we were able to take this through into the match on Saturday. The boys were unbelievable and I am so pleased for them.

“We went into the game on the back of a two-week break which allowed us to get a few of the injured lads back and also bring in some fresh faces.

“The problem earlier in the season was that far too many goals were being conceded, so we had to address that straight away and in my first game in interim charge we kept our first clean sheet of the season, so we’ve built from there.

“I’ve got a great group who are all enjoying their football and that is exactly what I want to see.”

There’s a big game coming up on Saturday as they host Thame United who sit just one place and one point above them as they set their sights on moving off the foot of the table.
