PITCHING IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER SOUTH | WEEKEND REVIEW

Salisbury hit top spot

The weather played its part in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South as four fixtures succumbed to the rain, including leaders, Gosport Borough’s trip to Hayes & Yeading United.

It meant that Salisbury were able to take advantage and move to top spot following a dramatic late winner to give them a 3-2 success at Harrow Borough. The visitors went ahead through Charlie Gunson only for Reece Mitchell to cancel it out soon afterwards. Noah Coppin put Salisbury back in front just before half-time but the hosts hit back again as Victor Osobu levelled with six minutes to go only for Tom Leggett to notch a stoppage time winner and send his side to the top of the table for the first time since 2011.

Both AFC Totton and Merthyr Town fell to defeat. For AFC Totton it was a home reverse at the hands of Hungerford Town, who raced into a two-goal lead with strikes either side of half-time by Adulai Sambu and Elis Watts. Experienced campaigner, Scott Rendell, pulled a goal back late on but it proved to be too little, too late.

Meanwhile a goal towards the end of the opening period from Ethan Light was enough to see Hendon beat Merthyr Town.

There was plenty of entertainment at Basingstoke Town as they edged a seven-goal thriller against Swindon Supermarine. An early goal from Dan Rowe set Basingstoke on their way only for Matt Liddiard to equalise right on half-time. Within a minute of the leveller, Rowe had put the home side back in front. It wasn’t long after the restart that Sam Turl made it 2-2 but Liam Ferdinand put the host back in front only for that strike to be cancelled out within four minutes. It was Ferdinand who bagged what proved to be the winner with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

Two goals within the opening ten minutes from Toby Holmes and Tony-James Lee set Poole Town on their way to victory at Beaconsfield Town. Billy Lowes added a third goal just past the half-hour before the ever-green Jefferson Louis hit a late consolation for the hosts.
