The partnership of Brandon Njoku and Jonny Edwards is really starting to bear fruit for St. Ives Town.
After a slow start to the campaign, The Ives have now won their last three Pitching In Southern League Premier Central games in a row, as a 3-2 home triumph over Royston Town and a 1-0 away win at Coalville Town was followed by last weekend’s 4-2 success over Halesowen Town, a game which saw them four goals to the good by half-time.
During this run, Njoku has weighed in with five goals, whilst Edwards has two goals and a number of assists to his name.
“We’ve been waiting to have the two of them up top together,” said manager, Ricky Marheineke. “They have both had injuries in the early part of the season, but it’s no coincidence that since we’ve had them both available together, we’ve seen an upturn in results.
“I called it at the start of the season when we were able to bring Brandon to the club. I felt then that their partnership would be deadly and now they are just getting better and better by the week.
“Their combination play is excellent; they feed off each other and both are flourishing.
“It’s easy to single Brandon out because of his goals, but it’s the relationship that he has with Jonny and the way in which they work together that has allowed him to get the number of goals he has recently.
“Jonny is getting back to full fitness now; he is working exceptionally hard and there are a number of other players who are also returning for us.
“We’re a good side when everyone is fit and available, so long may this continue.”
Powerful striker, Njoku, is on loan from EFL League One outfit, Cambridge United, where he has impressed greatly whilst coming through the ranks. Last term saw him loaned out to St. Neots Town and Cheshunt as he reaps the benefits of playing competitive football.
Meanwhile Edwards counts the likes of Peterborough United, Hull City and Accrington Stanley amongst his former clubs. He ended last season as St. Ives’ top scorer.
Saturday sees them head to Aveley of the Vanarama National League South in what promises to be an intriguing Isuzu FA Trophy tie.
