Supporters all over the world are able to follow the fortunes of Pitching In Southern League Premier South club, Hanwell Town, thanks to their online radio commentary service that broadcasts live coverage of all their home and away games.
It is the brainchild of Rob Overfield, who offered his services to the club at the turn of this year having spent 11 years as Press Officer and then Matchday Secretary at Hampton & Richmond Borough.
“During the Covid lockdown, I volunteered to provide commentary for Hampton & Richmond’s video stream, having had some experience doing some occasional radio work assisting a local hospital radio station,” Overfield revealed. “The video stream then became Hampton's online radio channel for the 2021/22 season, and I became one of the channel's regular voices.
“I left Hampton in January this year, for personal reasons, and contacted Hanwell Town as they were my local club and I felt that, as a result of my experiences, I had a lot to offer them, media wise.
“After meeting with the club’s Marketing Manager Elsa Jones, I offered to set up and organise a completely new venture for the Geordies, an online radio feed to provide live match commentary from wherever the club is, home or away, and this was enthusiastically received by the club committee and also by manager Chris Moore.
“Named The Geordie Matchday, myself and club colleague, Searus Aynsley, came together to get it all running in February this year.
“I love doing the live commentary for Hanwell Town, as it enables those supporters and club officials to keep in close touch with the Geordies wherever they are, plus it helps those with sight impairments to follow the action as it happens.
“Listeners have tuned in to The Geordie Matchday from across Europe and the US to share the action from across the Southern League with us and that thought alone makes it all so satisfying.
“I also love the fact that it’s open to supporters of all clubs, which is how it should be, and knowing that supporters of other clubs are enjoying our commentary makes it even more of a challenge for Searus and myself.
“Hanwell Town has been a truly welcoming club to me, and I hope to be able to help them for many years to come.”
The Geordie Matchday will be broadcasting live coverage of Hanwell Town’s home game this weekend as they take on Tiverton Town.
