MALVERN TOWN | GOAL OF THE WEEK

Annear tops our latest Goal of the Week Poll

The Pitching In Southern League Goal of the Week Poll was a close one this week with four very worthy contestants battling it out.

In the end, it was Jordan Annear’s long-range strike for Malvern Town in their Division One South 6-0 victory over Bashley that nicked it with 37% of the vote.

“The goal was a bit of an interesting one really,” he told us. “We had a throw-in just inside their half and I’ve pushed off the CB to get some space to receive the ball. As I’m just about to receive it I’ve glanced over my shoulder and noticed the defender hadn’t followed me so I knew I had some space. Then as I’ve turned I’ve noticed the goalkeeper not set and off his line, so I just took the shot from about 30 yards out and saw it fly in!

“It hit the outside of my boot slightly so was always curling away from the goalkeeper! It was one of my better goals I’ve scored that’s for sure.”

Things have started to click into place for The Hillsiders recently as they come to terms with the demands of the higher level following promotion via the play-offs at the end of last season.

“I definitely feel like we are starting to find our feet at Southern League level,” added Annear who was the club’s first summer signing. “We’ve always known we have that quality in the team which we show week in, week out at training.

“Maybe because a handful of the lads, myself included, are new so it was always going to take a few months for it to click and for people to learn how each other play.

“I’m really enjoying left at the club. When I met with the Gaffers [Lee Hooper and Stephen Cleal] before I joined, I got the feeling that it’s a great club and now being here for five months, it’s clear to see that the whole management and everyone around the club is so passionate!

“All of the lads are great to be around and everyone gets along which is what you need as a squad.”

Hailing from Cornwall, Annear made his mark with the likes of Falmouth Town and Plymouth Parkway before heading north.

“My wife and I moved up to Bishops Cleeve back in July 2021,” he continued. “After winning the League with Cleeve the following season, I then had a short spell at Stourport Swifts last season in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

“I then got the chance to play Southern League football with Malvern in the summer and it was a no brainer really!

“My aims and targets for the season are to just keep playing regularly and continue chipping in with goals when I can to help the team.

“As I say, I feel like we are starting to find our feet at this level so we just want to keep putting in good performances and picking up as many points as we can.”

Annear will be even more keen to do well at the weekend as Malvern Town play host to Mousehole. The Cornishman has already scored against them in the Isuzu FA Trophy earlier in the season and will be looking to do the same again on Saturday.
