WELWYN GARDEN CITY | FOUR PLAY

Four goals for Stevenson leads to fourth straight win

Saturday’s action saw Bailey Stevenson score all four goals for Welwyn Garden City in their 4-2 Pitching In Southern League Division One Central away win at Kings Langley.

The 21 year-old notched his first two strikes within the opening six minutes before completing his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time and then adding his fourth right at the death to help his side reach the 20-point mark and make it four victories in a row.

“I am over the moon with my own performance and that of the whole team,” he told us. “To score all four of our goals was really special for me, it’s the first time I have done it at this level, the last time was in the Spartan Premier League for Cockfosters.

“The first goal was a good move and a brilliant ball across from Brad [Wadkins] which I didn’t even have to break stride to get on the end of.

“The second was more of a poachers’ goal as Cyrus [Babaie-Gumbs} had a shot that was parried by the ‘keeper and I was able to smash it home from the angle, then my hat-trick goal came when Jack Vasey played me in down the right and I squared the defender up, knocked it past him before firing a shot into the near post.

“The fourth goal was my favourite; we were down to ten men at this stage and under pressure but the ball was played over the top and it bounced up lovely for me to fire home from around 35 yards on the half-volley to seal the win.”

The victory takes the Citizens to just outside the top ten as we enter the month of December.

“We started the season quite slowly,” admitted Stevenson. “But our form has started to pick up and with the talented squad we have, hopefully the only way is up now.

“A shoulder injury halted my own early progress but I’ve managed to pick up a few goals and assists recently and this is something that I am looking to build upon now.

“This is such a competitive division with a lot of strong sides and you cannot underestimate any team. I’ll be working hard to help the team continue climbing the table and hopefully add to my goalscoring and assists tally.

“Saturday’s performance has certainly given me added confidence.”

Welwyn Garden City return to action on Tuesday evening as they play host to Kempston Rovers.
