STAMFORD | JACK IN THE BOX

Spirits high for front-man

Just one defeat from their last seven Pitching In Southern League Premier Central games, including a convincing 4-0 victory over Mickleover on Tuesday evening, sees Stamford heading into the festive period with spirits high.

Front-man Jack Duffy got his name on the scoresheet in their last game and is enjoying being part of the buzz at the club, who won the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One Midlands last term.

“We’re entering the festive period with some great momentum,” Duffy told us. “There’s a real buzz around the whole club and its showing in our results.

“This is a tough time of the year and because there are so many games in such a short space of time from Christmas into January, it’s probably the most important time too.

“It’s vital that we can pick up as many points as possible. The tough surfaces, cold nights and long trips don’t make it easy, but it’s why I adore this game.”

Being new to the League this season, we asked Duffy how it compared to what he was expecting at the outset of the campaign.

“The one major difference I have noticed is the importance of taking chances,” he said. “Teams in this League are a lot more clinical and punish mistakes.

“I’m never 100% happy with my own game, but I’ve been scoring goals and enjoying my football, which is the main thing.

“There’s a real togetherness amongst the group, and although we’ve had some results go against us over the course of the first half of the season, we’ve always managed to find a way to bounce back and that speaks volumes.

“I am looking forward to what this team can do over the second half of the season. Tuesday’s victory sees us sit fourth and we have a real opportunity to kick-on from here.

“If I can reach 20 League goals and help us reach the play-offs, I will be happy.”

Stamford host Bromsgrove Sporting at the weekend and then have a home game against St. Ives Town on New Year’s Day, whilst the scheduled trip to Nuneaton Borough on Boxing Day postponed due to ground availability issues for the home side.
