Having been laid low with an ACL injury for over a year, Merthyr Town, striker, Gethyn Hill, is back firing on all cylinders, but it could have easily been a different story.
The 28 year-old admitted that he came close to hanging up his boots, but is now playing his part in a four-game winning run for the Pitching In Southern League Premier South club in which he has found the net twice and provided a number of assists.
“It was difficult watching from the sidelines and being out for 14 or 15 months,” he told Cymru Sport. “I’m at the age where I started to debate whether to come back or not.
“My wife played a huge part in getting me to stick at it; she was a real support mechanism for me and now I am so pleased that I pushed through and did the work to get back into action.
“It’s great to be back out there again and I’m looking forward to what the second half of the season holds in store.
“There’s a good feeling around the place and we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing. Going into the season, we believed that we could be up there amongst the leading pack and now we’re halfway through the season, we’ve just got to keep working and finding a level of consistency.
“It’s a long season and there’s still plenty of football to be played, but I can’t wait to get stuck into it.”
New Year’s Day sees fourth-placed Merthyr head to Hungerford Town, who go into the game just one place below them.
