There was joy for Basingstoke Town on Saturday as they tasted victory for the first time in ten Pitching In Southern League Premier South matches as they recovered from going a goal behind in the first minute to win 2-1 at Hanwell Town.
Manager, Dan Brownlie, has battled an unforgiving injury list during the first half of the season, but despite that his side sit 13th and are looking up the table rather than over their shoulders.
“It was a tough battle at the weekend and we were made to work hard to get that elusive win,” admitted Brownlie. “But we managed to get the job done.
“At half-time I asked for a bit more steel and aggression along with more ball retention up top, and I certainly got that.
“It was a long overdue win; it was a gritty performance and I was delighted for the lads and, of course, the supporters who have really stuck with us and I can only thank them for their patience as there would be a lot of clubs where this wouldn’t be the case.
“Saturday was the strongest XI that we have been able to field for a while because of injuries and we’ve still got a few bodies to come back into contention.
“It was a positive day in that respect and now if we can marry this grittiness with the free-flowing football that I know we are capable of, it will stand us in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead over the second half of the season.”
A home game against Tiverton Town awaits on Saturday for the Dragons.
