Edwards leads by example with four-goal haul

It was a result that made everyone sit up and take notice as St. Ives Town went to joint Pitching In Southern League leaders, Mickleover, on Saturday and came home with an emphatic 5-0 success.

What’s more, four of the goals came in the second half and all from one man – skipper, Jonny Edwards.

“It’s not every game you score four goals, especially away at the League leaders,” Edwards told us with a smile. “To be honest, every opportunity I get I believe that I have a good chance of scoring. The important thing is to not beat myself up about it when it doesn’t go in and just make sure that I am ready for when the next chance comes along.

“On Saturday, most of them went in for me and the fact that we were playing against high-flying opponents made it extra special.

“I was happy because it means that I am doing my job. The finishes were all inside the box; two either side of the area, back across the goal, another from the penalty spot, where I enjoy having the responsibility, and the other I didn’t have a clue about, I just anticipated where the ball might end up and it hit me and went in, a proper striker’s tap-in!

“The most important thing, though, was that we got the three points and we did it by every single player doing their job.

“We played with confidence, were brave in the press, had belief in each other and everything that we have worked on in training just clicked into place.

“We’ve been able to find consistency throughout the team over the last 15 games or so with everyone working together and pulling in the same direction. More importantly, though, everyone has been enjoying it.

“Our form has shown that no matter who we play, we can fancy our chances. This is probably the third or fourth time we’ve scored five or more goals in a game this season and I believe that there will be more to come.

“It’s no surprise to us because we work hard on the things we’re good at and the Gaffer has always had faith in this group, even when things weren’t going our way earlier in the season.

“Now as we look ahead to the rest of the season, our aims are the same as they have always been; to control the things we can, maintain the high standards that we set ourselves and each other and just enjoy the journey because that’s ultimately what it’s all about.

“We’re gradually climbing the table and if I can keep doing my job and stay focussed to help the team, then I will be happy.”

St. Ives Town sit just inside the top ten and their next League outing is another mouth-watering affair as they play host to another high-flying side in Needham Market on Saturday.
