MERTHYR TOWN | VICTORY ON EMOTIONAL DAY

Martyrs pay tribute to Anthony Hughes with commanding win

It was an emotional afternoon at Penydarren Park on Saturday as Merthyr Town paid tribute to Anthony Hughes.

The Pitching In Southern League Premier South club were able to bounce back from defeats in their previous two outings with a commanding 4-0 victory over Didcot Town, as Ricardo Rees helped himself to a hat-trick.

“I was really pleased with the performance,” manager, Paul Michael, told his club’s media at the end. “Off the back of two defeats, it was a massive game for us, but we controlled it throughout and deserved the win.

“To be able to get the three points and also put in an impressive display was fantastic. It was a second hat-trick of the season for Ricardo; he works so hard for the team and is such a great player, but he doesn’t get those goals without the help of his team-mates around him.

“There’s still a lot of football to be played this season. We now have two tough away games in a row coming up at Gosport Borough and Chesham United. We’ll see where we are after these games, but it’s nice to be in this position.

“It’s been quite a journey for us and we’ll continue battling on to get to where we want to be.”

The victory leaves the Martyrs handily-placed in third position in the table.

Meanwhile, Keith Allen (Southern League President) and David Martin (Southern League Acting Chairman) were on hand ahead of the game to present Les Barlow (Merthyr Town Chairman) and Paul Michael (Merthyr Town Manager) with their PST Sport Club of the Month award for December 2023.
