The battle for the Pitching In Southern League Division One South title looks like going right down to the wire as current leaders, Wimborne Town, battle it out with Frome Town.
Going into the Easter weekend, four points separate the two teams with Frome having a game in hand as they start to break away from the chasing pack.
The goals of Kane Simpson and James Ollis are spearheading the Frome challenge, with Simpson’s hat-trick earning a 3-2 victory at Evesham United at the weekend and making it five goals from his last three games for the lively front-runner who rejoined the club at the start of the season.
“The title race is between two good teams who just seem to keep winning at the moment,” Simpson told us. “From our point of view, we’ve just got to keep doing our business and see where it takes us come the end of the season.
“Our performances have been good throughout the season, but it seems as though we’ve hit our best form at a crucial part of the season and hopefully we can keep it going into the coming weeks.
“I’ve been pleased with my own form; I don’t usually set myself goals targets, I just try to help the team in any way I can to achieve the objectives that we set out at the start of the season.
“Obviously it’s nice to be able to get my name on the scoresheet regularly and it was special that last weekend’s hat-trick took me through the 50-goal mark from my two spells at the club.
“It would not have been possible without the help of my team-mates, of course, and they have been brilliant.
“As a group we’re really looking forward to the run-in; it’s what we all play the game for. You want to be able to get to the end of the season and be playing in big games and challenging for honours.”
Frome Town’s Easter schedule sees them host Bideford on Saturday before heading to Melksham Town on Monday.
