MELKSHAM TOWN | SMILES BETTER

A night to remember

It was certainly a night to remember for Melksham Town as they made the long trip down to Mousehole on Tuesday evening in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South.

Floodlight issues meant that the game kicked off 25 minutes late and within six minutes of the action finally getting underway, the visitors found themselves two goals behind.

They managed to pull a goal back through Henry Sady quickly after conceding the second and that gave them the springboard to eventually go on and level matters in the second half through Sam Hendy.

But the home side hit back once more to regain the lead with under 15 minutes to go. Still trailing 3-2 as the game went into stoppage time, all looked lost until Luke Ballinger equalised and then Ben Brooks popped up with a dramatic winner with virtually the last touch.

It was a monumental effort for a team who had travelled 230 miles to get to the game.

“There is no better feeling having travelled all that way to get a victory in the manner we did,” said Melksham Town Co Kit Man, Ashley Wheeler. “Non-League football certainly gives you plenty of ups and downs, but this was one of those occasions that we’ll remember for some time to come!

“I don’t think any other sport can provide such emotions as this!

“The logistics of travelling to Mousehole for a Tuesday evening game are tricky, but it’s all part-and-parcel of the game.

“The club helped to make life easier for us in terms of staying overnight, but it does take great commitment from the players and staff, particularly with work and family life also to consider.

“For me, being Kit Man is one of the best jobs in football, it’s the next best thing to playing and the appreciation that myself and Jamie [Bush], the other Kit Man, get from the players and management makes it all worthwhile.

“It’s a great feeling being part of this club and the celebrations in the dressing room after Tuesday’s win just shows the camaraderie and togetherness that we have amongst the group here.”

Melksham Town are back on home soil for their next two games as they host Bemerton Heath Harlequins on Saturday and then Bideford AFC on Tuesday. Their final away game sees them make the somewhat shorter journey to Bristol Manor Farm before the season ends with a home game against title hopefuls, Wimborne Town, on the final day.
