Important victory in relegation battle

The battle at the bottom of the Pitching In Southern League Premier South is really hotting up.

A 2-0 victory for Tiverton Town over Winchester City took them out of the bottom four with just two games to go.

Weighing in with an assist for the first goal and finding the net for the second with quarter-of-an-hour to go was Joe Parker, who joined the club on loan from Gloucester City at the turn of the year.

The lively front-runner has certainly made a favourable impression at the Devon outfit.

“I couldn’t have wished for any more from a personal point of view than a goal and an assist,” he told his club’s media. “We needed that win; there was a lot of pressure on us to get it but the lads were excellent and it was nice that I was able to make a contribution.

“The result moves us out of the relegation zone, but there is still work to be done, it’s by no means over yet.

“We can’t afford to get too carried away; our focus immediately turns to Saturday’s game and it’s another big one at Harrow Borough.

“The lads are buzzing and there’s no reason why we can’t go on and get six points out of these final two games.

“We need to take the momentum that we have into Saturday and hopefully add to our points tally. For me, I just try to run around as much as I can and hit the ball as hard as I can – I am hoping that it can serve us well once more in these final games!”

After travelling to Harrow Borough at the weekend, Tiverton end with a home clash against another side embroiled in the battle to avoid the drop, Sholing.

Thursday’s other game saw Hanwell Town leapfrog above opponents, Plymouth Parkway, courtesy of a 4-0 win with goals from Elliot Benyon, who bagged a brace, Olayami Oyinsan and Callum Woodcock. Despite the commanding triumph, they remain just inside the relegation zone.
