Now that the dust has settled on their title-winning celebrations, Harry Morgan has reflected upon Wimborne Town’s successful 2023/24 season.
It was even sweeter for the 28 year-old attacker as he is one of the only players remaining at the club from their relegation campaign of 2021/22 where they mustered just four wins from their 42 League games.
It was a different story this time around as they were part of the leading pack throughout before eventually pulling away from the chasing pack and battling it out with Frome Town for the title, a race which went right down to the final day of the season.
“It means a lot to be part of helping this club get back up into Step 3,” Morgan told us. “It’s been class, especially the way we did it on the final day.
“Being one of the only players left from that relegation season, it does make it feel even better that I have been able to help the club get back up and it’s clear to see how much it means to everyone around the place.
“We had to show a lot of character in that final game. We’d had a couple of chances to seal the title and not taken them, and then we found ourselves 1-0 down at Melksham within the opening five minutes, so as a group we had to deal with the pressure of that, but thankfully our quality came shining through and we were able to get the job done.
“There were quite a few highlights from over the course of the season, including plenty of late winners which, again, shows the resolve and determination that this team has.
“We’ve also had some strong team performances where we played decent football in difficult conditions, games at Exmouth Town and Mousehole readily spring to mind. From a personal point of view, I enjoyed the last-minute winner against Bristol Manor Farm and the headed equaliser against Frome Town in front of a bumper crowd.
“Of course, the final goal at Melksham to really cement the title was very special and something that I will never forget. I must give a special mention to the classy way in which Melksham received us winning the League and to do it at their lovely ground made it a perfect occasion.
“To lose only five League games all season is pretty impressive; there were no easy games, we just had this knack of grinding out wins, a lot of which were by the odd goal.
“Now we’ll start to prepare ourselves for the challenges that the higher level will present to us and be ready to go again.”
