BEDFORD TOWN | BABY BOOM

Memorable week for Kyle Connolly

What a week it has been for Bedford Town’s Kyle Connolly.

Just days after welcoming daughter, Felicity, into the world, he opened the scoring as his side secured promotion with a 2-1 victory over Waltham Abbey in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central play-off final.

“It’s been a very special time,” he told us. “I went into Monday’s game on a personal high and had a really good feeling about it!

“To get my name on the scoresheet and to win was absolutely perfect. Having won promotion at Steps 3 and 5 previously, I came to Bedford to achieve promotion at Step 4 so I was delighted that we were able to do it!

“It was a tough game; Waltham Abbey are a good side and credit to them for what they brought to the table on Monday.

“I would imagine that it was an exciting game to watch as both sides like to play counter-attacking football. We were more clinical in both boxes and that was the difference; it was our seventh successive win and certainly the sweetest!”

Having followed manager, Lee Bircham, from Leighton Town during the summer, Connolly’s early progress was halted by injury.

“It was frustrating as I suffered a fractured talus bone and then had Achillies tendinitis. I probably ended up playing 15 games less than I expected and my goal/assist tally was half the amount too, but the main thing was that I was able to find form for the business end of the season.

“Overall, it was a bit of a mediocre League this season and I think that the final points tallies reflect this. Leagues should be won with 85+ points, in my opinion, but we got the promotion that we were so focused on from the very start.”
