History was made at AFC Sudbury this season as they competed at Step 3 for the first-ever time.
It was a campaign which saw them battling in the lower reaches of the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central table, but ultimately proved successful as they were able to consolidate their position, with safety achieved on the final day.
Manager, Marc Abbott’s hard work has been rewarded with a new two-year deal, with the club seeing him as the man to continue leading them throughout the remainder of their three-year plan to transition the club into one which can compete at the higher levels whilst also increasing the breadth of its inclusivity and reach within the local community.
“There is no escaping the fact that it has been a real challenge this season,” Abbott admitted to us. “The players and staff have worked diligently over the past nine months; we’ve evolved naturally as a team and ended up finding the formula to secure our status in the Premier Central for next season.
“We are extremely proud of what has been achieved here and this experience will certainly stand us all in good stead and assist the players in their individual development for future years.
“Throughout the campaign, we had a never too high or never too low mentality. The players never got emotionally attached to the League table; we knew the task ahead of us was going to be a tough one, but we just got on with our job and showed an excellent attitude and commitment.
“We were part of a good, competitive League based on the playing styles and size of clubs involved. It was a case of us getting used to playing against new clubs and at new grounds.
“Our aims moving forward are to better our finish this season. We know that we have to be realistic, but our greater understanding of what is needed at this level will be a big help and we feel that we can bring in some additions that will benefit and enhance the group that we already have here.
“We almost have or pre-season programme of matches complete. We’ve identified fixtures that will challenge us and give us a good gauge of where we’re at with the teams coming up.
“We know that Step 3 is going to be strong again next year but we are relishing the challenge that will stand before us.”
