It wasn’t a bad first season as captain for Owen Howe at Willand Rovers.
The experienced striker, who has previously served the likes of Bristol Manor Farm, Tiverton Town, Taunton Town, Salisbury and Barnstaple, arrived at the club last summer and was handed the armband for the first time.
“I’ve always wanted to have a go at being skipper,” he admitted to us. “I am grateful for getting the opportunity here; it was nice and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
“We bettered the previous season’s League finish and I also got to lift some silverware at the end of the season as we won the St. Luke’s Challenge Cup, so there was plenty to be positive about.
“I didn’t score as many as I have done in recent seasons and that is definitely something I will be looking to improve upon going into the new season.
“But, as I say, it was good to have the added responsibility of wearing the armband and being able to pass on some of my experience to the younger lads who did well even though we were unable to maintain our bright start to the season.
“There are some good teams in this League and the standard was high. It will also nice to be able to visit some new teams and different grounds and face the challenges that they present.”
Having led the Pitching In Southern League Division One South table on a number of occasions during the opening months of the campaign, the Devon club fell away to eventually finish 14th – one place higher than previously.
They also beat Ilfracombe Town in the final of the St. Luke’s Challenge Cup to secure some local silverware.
