With the thrills and spills of the 2023/24 season now over, we have asked supporters from across our four divisions to share their thoughts on the campaign.
Thank you to everyone who has taken part...
NAME | Pete Martin
CLUB | Salisbury FC – Pitching In Southern League Premier South
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR CLUB AND HOW DID YOUR SUPPORT FIRST BEGIN? | I have been following Salisbury FC since the new club formed in 2015. Before that I was taken to my first Salisbury City game by a neighbour in 1998 when I was aged nine and have been going regularly ever since.
HOW MANY OF THIS SEASON’S GAMES WERE YOU ABLE TO ATTEND? | I have been able to attend every home and away game in both League and Cup.
WHICH OF YOUR TEAM’S PLAYERS HAVE MOST STOOD OUT FOR YOU OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON AND WHY? | Tom Leggett. He played in about six different positions for us over the course of the season and is a 7/10 every single week. Mr. Consistent.
WHICH GAME MOST STANDS OUT FROM THIS SEASON AND WHY? | Apart from the play-off final victory, winning 5-4 away at Poole Town at the end of January stands out for me. There’s a bit of rivalry with their fans and we were 3-1 and 4-2 down before coming back and scoring a 91st minute winner. They then missed a penalty with the last kick of the game which would have secured them a share of the spoils.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE AWAY GROUND TO VISIT AND WHY? | Merthyr Town. It’s a proper football ground with concrete terraces and it has atmosphere and character that you don’t get at a lot of the newer grounds that are just one decent sized seated stand and not a lot else.
HOW DID THE SEASON COMPARE TO YOUR HOPES DURING THE SUMMER? | We were miles ahead of where I thought we’d be, especially after two consecutive 15th placed finishes. Brian Dutton’s first full season in charge saw him keep only three players from last season and bring in a whole new squad of young, hungry players, supplemented with a couple of experienced heads that I thought may take a while to fully gel. I thought we may be upper mid-table and flirt with the edge of the play-offs, but to finish third and go up via the play-offs, whilst playing some excellent football, was beyond my dreams.
