EVESHAM UNITED | MESSENGER ON A MISSION

New start for Reegan Messenger following Cirencester Town disappointment

When a club makes the difficult decision to take voluntary relegation, it is tough on all concerned.

Having agonisingly just missed out on making the play-offs in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central at the end of each of the last two seasons, Cirencester Town made the tough call to leave the Southern League, their home since 1996, in May.

“After being up there challenging in recent seasons, and personally being associated with my local club since the U11s, it was very sad to see Ciren drop out of the Southern League,” admitted the talented Reegan Messenger, who emerged as one of the players to watch for the club last term. “To come up through the ranks and make my mark on the first-team made me and my family extremely proud; I have learned a lot and made so many friends along the way.

“It made the decision to leave a tough one, but last season proved what I am capable of at Step 4 and I am looking forward to the challenge that has presented itself to me at Evesham United.

“The Gaffer [Mike Ford] really sold the club to me and the ambitions that they have; it didn’t take long for me to agree to sign and now I can’t wait to pick up from where I left off last season.

“Going into Division One South, I know that it will be a very competitive League. It will be nice to play a few more local games than has been the case over the past couple of seasons, but more importantly, it offers me another season at this level and the chance to gain further experience, so I can keep pushing on.

“I am now looking forward to meeting all of the lads and getting stuck into pre-season. The new season can’t come soon enough for me!

“Just like at Cirencester, the play-offs have to be the minimum aim for us. I’ll be doing all I can to play my part; I will be aiming for double figures in goals scored and just try to work as hard as I can for the team.”
