Having recently signed a new deal, Liam Ferdinand is looking forward to what's ahead

Liam Ferdinand is in a good place, and its not just down to the fact that he has recently agreed a new deal with Basingstoke Town, he also enjoys the cut-and-thrust pre-season!

“Believe it or not, I actually do enjoy pre-season and all that comes with it,” he revealed to us. “I always complain that we don’t get a long enough break, but then once it comes around, I get into it.

“It’s a good chance to test yourself again and set new goals for the upcoming season. I also enjoy playing against different clubs and at different grounds that you don’t usually play at, so that’s another appealing aspect.

“I am very much looking forward to the season ahead and pushing on together as a team - I haven't managed to train with the boys yet because of an injury that I carried over from last season, which I am still recovering from, but I have been watching and can see that we are forming a strong unit.

“Gearing up for a new season and being optimistic is what it's all about.”

Ferdinand made the switch to Basingstoke Town in October from Pitching In Southern League Premier South rivals, Bracknell Town, and even though injury did halt his progress, he did enough to prove what a valuable asset he is.

“Looking back, I would say that it was a mixed season for me last year,” he continued. “I missed the start of the season, which is never ideal, and when I did get back playing, things didn’t quite work out as I expected at my club.

“It resulted in me changing clubs mid-season, which I don’t really like to do, but it worked in my favour as I started to get back to myself again and enjoying my football.

“The team had its ups and downs; when I first arrived there were a lot of players out injured and we struggled for form, but when players started to return, we were able to find our form and went on a good run towards the end of the season, which saw us fly up the table.

“It’s always a tough League, I think this is my third time playing in it now and each time it has been extremely competitive.

“I am not expecting it to be as much of a one-horse race this time around as it turned out to be last season. The play-off spots will be competitive with a high number of teams fancying their chances of getting in.

“There's always a dark horse that surprises people too, so it will be interesting to see who that is going to be this year.

“I will always set myself personal targets in terms of goal scoring and assists, but, to be honest, I just want to prioritise enjoying my football and expressing myself. When you are able to do that as a player, you are always going to show your best self.

“I'm more settled going into this season on and off-the-pitch, so I am feeling good about it. You can ask me at the end of the season if I achieved my personal goals or not!”
