ALVECHURCH | FRIENDS REUNITED

Dan Sweeney delighted to be amongst 'proper football people'

The talented Dan Sweeney has finally found a place to call home amongst friends and ‘proper football people’ at Alvechurch.

The much-travelled 26 year-old is expected to light up the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central during the season ahead having returned to a club where he had a successful loan spell at the turn of the year.

“The decision to sign for Alvechurch was a relatively easy one for me to make,” the lifelong and passionate Birmingham City supporter admitted to us. “The Chairman [Richard Thorndike] is one of the best guys I’ve met in the game, and I’ve met quite a few! Along with the Gaffer [James Fry] and player/assistant manager, Richard Batchelor, they are proper football people who will make it enjoyable for me again.

“I came here on loan in January after coming back from my operation and I quickly settled in with the players and staff. It was reflected in my performances on the pitch and hopefully this can be the case again.

“This is a club who try to do things the right way; the training facilities and the work they do to develop players, creates the right kind of environment and I am delighted to be part of it again, working with good people.

“This time of the year is never easy and you can never get used to it no matter how many pre-seasons you do. But it’s always nice to be back around the dressing room with some familiar faces and also get to know some new lads.

“The work we do is never enjoyable, though, it’s a necessary evil to get us ready for the challenges ahead.

“It’s going to be a tough and competitive season. There are a lot of good teams at this level who are all vying to achieve the same thing. We know that the season is never won by Christmas; it’s a long, hard campaign with plenty of miles to go with it.

“My aim is to play as many games as I can and contribute with goals and assists. I’ve set a number of specific targets, but I prefer to keep them to myself!

“With the staff that we have here, such as James, Richard and Steve Hensel, alongside experienced players like Krystian Pearce and Ty Barnett and the talented younger lads, we have a good mix and I am sure that it will make the season an enjoyable one for us all.

“For me it’s an opportunity to learn off some of the most experienced men outside of The Football League and I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got.”
