With the fixtures now announced for the season ahead, the sense of anticipation has grown considerably for AFC Dunstable co-manager, James Townsend.
“The release of the fixtures just adds fuel to the fire,” said Townsend, who saw his side finish third in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central last term and fall at the play-off hurdle. “I just can’t wait for the action to start!
“Pre-season has been good; there’s been a lot of new faces and plenty of hungry players who, just like me, are raring to go.
“We’ve worked hard on the training pitch and have had a good variation of challenges in our pre-season friendly fixtures so far.
“There is a clear strategy here; young players with potential and with an ambition to play higher. It worked for us last season and we’re looking to build upon it this time around.
“We are expecting lots of excellent challenges, from clubs we know as well as the new clubs entering the League. I forsee lots of different styles and lots of great games.
“It sounds obvious, but our challenge is to win as many football matches as possible WITHOUT losing our identity.
“We want to play possession-based football, with a variation of shapes and systems, and produce an environment for young players to express themselves, take risks and be competitive.
“As I say, I just can’t wait to get stuck into the cut-and-thrust of League action.”
AFC Dunstable begin their League season with an away trip to new-boys, Flackwell Heath, on Saturday, August 10th.
