BIGGLESWADE FC | SEND TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS

Pitching In Together project goes from strength-to-strength

As part of their ongoing relationship, Biggleswade FC and The Ivel Valley School recently staged a SEND Schools Football Tournament.

It took place at the Hillgrounds, home of fellow Pitching In Southern League Division One Central club, Kempston Rovers, as pupils from The Ivel Valley School took on their counterparts from The Grange School in Bedford for the inaugural Biggleswade FC Schools Cup.

In total, 34 boys and girls of mixed ages participated in what was a wonderful day for all involved.

This event was the latest part of a joint project, entitled Pitching In Together, between Biggleswade FC and The Ivel Valley School, which has been funded by a successful grant application to The Southern League.

The Trident Community Foundation Grant is designed to encourage and support football-led initiatives to engage with clubs’ local communities.

Pitching In Together aims to reach out and offer opportunities for local SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) pupils to engage with and take part in local non-League football and has been enthusiastically embraced by The Ivel Valley School.

Other parts of the project have already included the club hosting a match day experience for the children and their parents/carers and in school work, such as football coaching and presenting an assembly focusing upon the school and club’s shared values of teamwork, opportunity and resilience.

It’s hoped that the tournament can become an annual event and expand to include more SEND schools from within the local area.

Jeremy Reynolds, Biggleswade FC Chairman, said: “This was a fantastic way to end the school year and the first phase of our community project.

“It was clear to see how much enjoyment all the children got from taking part in the tournament and as a football club, we are delighted to support our local community through our ongoing partnership work with The Ivel Valley School.”

Wendy Chantrell, Physical Integration Leader at The Ivel Valley School, added: “The collaboration with Biggleswade FC has been a real highlight of our sporting year.

“We are excited to see how this relationship can develop and grow, not just within our school but within the local area.”

“The SEND football tournament was a real success,” continued Jack Young, Football Development Officer, Disability, for the Bedfordshire FA. “The event was filled with excitement and joy, providing a fantastic experience for all the children involved.

“Seeing the kids enjoying themselves, making new friends, and showcasing their football skills in a supportive and inclusive environment was heart-warming.

“We look forward to more events like this in the future.”
