The script could not have been written better for Flackwell Heath as they introduced themselves into the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 victory over last season’s play-off semi-finalists, AFC Dunstable.
Three goals in each half saw them romp home. Matty Ayres rounded off the scoring with a sublime late free-kick to complete a memorable afternoon.
“It was a brilliant start to the season for us,” Matty Ayres said with a smile. “After losing in the FA Cup the previous weekend, we knew we had to get back to our best quickly if we were to get anything out the game.
“To score six goals and keep a clean sheet after coming into a new League and against opponents who made the play-offs last season, is more than we could have hoped for, to be fair, but every single player was brilliant and we got what we deserved out the game.
“On a personal note, I was happy to get on the scoresheet with a free-kick; that really was the cherry on top of the cake and a nice ending to a memorable game.
“After winning the League at Step 5 last year, we all know what we are capable of when we are at our best and if we can keep delivering performances like Saturday, who knows where we could end up come the end of the season?
“That said, we all know it will be a very tough year and we have to stay as focused as we can.
“We don’t have any fear as a team, and our objectives are to show the energy and desire we have done for the last year in most games to see where it takes us.
“I’d like to get into double figures in goals this season, so this is a good start!
“Saturday’s victory is a massive confidence boost for everyone as we look to settle into this League and give us the belief that we can go on and win more games.”
Tuesday evening sees them head to North Leigh for their first away game of the campaign.
