History was made for Helston Athletic at the weekend as not only did they compete in their first-ever game at Step 4 level, they also secured their first victory courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 triumph at Westbury United in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South.
“I thought that the lads were terrific on Saturday,” said proud manager, Matt Cusack. “Huge credit must go to both sets of players who coped well with the heat and put on a competitive encounter.
“I felt that we controlled large spells of possession across both halves. Despite our efforts in open play, it was through two set-pieces where we scored both of our goals, within three minutes of each other, to put ourselves very much into the driving seat.
“We conceded late on to set up a frantic finish, but we were able to see it out and get the three points on what was an historic day for the club.
“Now we have to ensure that we can build on this and add to our points tally in a first home game at this level on Tuesday.”
It’s Willand Rovers who make the trip down from Devon to provide the opposition on Tuesday evening.
