Jack Mazzone wasted little time in getting back into the swing of things at Chertsey Town.
The lively striker was brought back to the club he served on loan back in 2011/12 to add know-how to their front-line ahead of their promotion into the Pitching In Southern League Premier South and he duly found the net within the opening two minutes of their first game of the season against Hungerford Town.
He followed it up with a brace at the weekend as The Curfews twice came from behind to win 3-2 at Tiverton Town.
“It was great to go away to a place like Tiverton, which is a long journey and come home with all three points,” he told us. “The minimum you want from a trip like this is a point so to get the win, having come from behind twice, is fantastic and it was a good journey home afterwards!
“The character amongst this group tells us that we can beat anyone on our day. We know that at this level we have to deliver every time we step out onto the pitch.
“On Saturday we came up against opponents that try to play to their strengths; the red card obviously had a say in the game, but overall, I felt that the best team won.
“I’ve been around the game long enough to know that a good team spirit can take you a long way whatever level you play at and we’ve got that here.
“When everyone is on the same page and has that understanding, then the sky really is the limit.
“I’ve played in this League before so the club was keen to have that knowledge of what it takes to be successful. From my experience, the top five or six tend to break away from the pack and I believe we can be part of that group.
“The problem in this League is that anyone can beat anyone on their day; we just need to keep delivering on game days and hopefully we end up where we want to be.
“As as a striker, you always set yourself a goals target whatever level you play at, but sometimes you have to be realistic. I’ve played this level for a few years and top goalscorer is the target, but with the level of ability in this League, I know it will be hard.
“I’d love to be somewhere around the 25-mark, but let’s see what happens!”
It’s a return to home action for Chertsey Town on Saturday as they host Frome Town.
