YATE TOWN | FIVE-STAR START

Experienced head, Marlon Jackson, making an impact

It’s been a five-star start to the season for Yate Town. Inspired by just missing out on the play-offs last term following an impressive second half of the campaign, the Bluebells have won all five of their opening games in all competitions.

On Saturday they claimed their ninth out of a possible nine in the Pitching In Southern League Division One as a late winner from Lucas Tomlinson, his fifth of the season, gave them a 2-1 triumph at Bashley.

Manager, Darren Mullings, has done some shrewd transfer business over the summer, including the signing of former Football League front-runner, Marlon Jackson, who has already been a positive influence.

The 33 year-old, who started his career with hometown club, Bristol City, before going on to serve the likes of Hereford United, Bury, Tranmere Rovers and Newport County, is someone that Mullings knows well and he has slotted seamlessly into the team.

“We’ve started the season well and it all comes down to the hard work and preparation that we put in over pre-season,” Jackson told us. “Behind the scenes, the management staff prepare so well individually for each game and the application of the lads has been first-class.

“As one of the experienced heads in the team, I can see that we have a number of younger lads here with real ability and a hunger to progress. It’s part of my role here to give them pointers as and when I can and help bring the best out of them.

“There was a lot of expectation on us going into the season, based on what was achieved last term. People expect us to just turn up and win games, but it is difficult to do that because there are some competitive teams at this level who can make life hard.

“We have to take it one game at a time and come through each challenge. We stuck to our task at Bashley and came through it with a late winner from Lucas [Tomlinson], who is playing with a lot of confidence in these opening games.

“I have personal goals, but they are secondary compared to the team goal of building momentum and winning games on a consistent basis.”

On Bank Holiday Monday, Yate Town host an Exmouth Town outfit who have won two and drawn one of their opening three League games to sit just a couple of points behind them.
