An eight-game unbeaten run has put Taunton Town on the fringes of the leading pack in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South as well as seeing them in the third round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup.
On Tuesday evening they chalked up a 3-1 victory over Swindon Supermarine to follow up their 5-2 triumph over Marlow at the weekend.
Finding the net in both games was Tom Purrington. The 23 year-old was one of a number of new faces who joined the club over the summer and have settled in quickly.
“We had a lot of changes during the summer, essentially a full squad reset,” Purrington told us. “So, it was always going to take time to gel after a whole new group of players coming in.
“It took us a little while to understand how each other plays, but we’ve certainly hit a bit of form over the past few weeks and this will only improve as the season goes on.
“We’ve been able to add a lot of quality to the team and there is good strength in depth, which will benefit us massively.
“The Gaffer has done well bringing in players who not only have the quality and ability, but are also good characters as well.
“Tuesday’s win was another big result for us; we seem to be gaining more and more momentum with each game and our ability to score goals is evident, with eight from our last two games alone. I felt that we dominated the game and we’re starting to show consistency in our performance levels now.
“Hopefully this can continue; I have been really pleased to be able to chip in with some goals. I’ve managed to break forward a bit further up the pitch and get into more dangerous areas, which in turn has allowed me to get more goals and assists than has previously been the case.
“The system we play allows me to have freedom in the midfield, which I enjoy, and hopefully there will be more goals and assists to come from me.
“I must say that the Premier South is probably the strongest it’s been in recent years, especially with the big clubs that have come down and the established clubs who are looking strong again.
“With the team we’ve assembled here, I can see no reason why we can’t compete at the upper end of the table. As a group we feel that we are capable of beating anyone.
“Our main focus is always on winning the next game and just take it from there. We won’t look too far ahead; obviously we want to be pushing for promotion and an FA Cup run would be nice too, so it’s important that we go into Saturday’s third round qualifying tie in the right frame of mind and get the job done.
“Personally, I want to play as many games as I can and contribute to us accumulating as many wins as possible in each game we face. It would be nice to keep scoring goals too. I will always push myself to keep improving my game.”
The Peacocks have a home tie against Amersham Town on Saturday as they look to continue on the Emirates FA Cup journey.
