WELWYN GARDEN CITY | WINNING START

New boy hits the ground running

Reece Cameron was able to hit the ground running on his debut for Welwyn Garden City as he played his part in a dramatic stoppage time victory at local rivals, Ware, last weekend.

It gave The Citizens their second Pitching In Southern League Division One Central win in a row to put them just outside the top five.

The 27 year-old made the switch from Thame United, where he already had three goals to his name this term.

“I started the season well at Thame but things didn’t go to plan, it happens in football sometimes,” he told us. “When I became available, I was overwhelmed with how many managers and clubs contacted me, but having spoken to the Gaffer here, I knew that this was a great opportunity for me.

“I know a few of the lads already, so that helped me get an insight. To win 2-1 away at Ware in my first game was a good start; it was important for me to have a good debut so to help us pick up three points in a derby, against opponents who are expected to be right up there again this season, was a nice way to start.

“It’s clear that we have a talented group here; we created a lot of chances on Saturday and there is plenty more to come from us.

“It was a deserved three points and I was personally very happy with my own performance. It would have been nice to have got a goal, but that will come.

“This is such a competitive division, you can’t take any team for granted and if you’re not 100% you will get found out.

“We have to aim for the play-offs minimum. With the squad we have here, there is no reason why we can’t go for promotion. Hopefully I can play my part in that.”

Cameron stands by to make his home debut for the club on Saturday as they host Enfield.
