Goals in successive games for 'keeper Cairney

The Pitching In Southern League is a real treasure trove of great stories and none more so than at Winchester City where goalkeeper, Luke Cairney, has just scored in successive games against two of his former clubs!

After a succession of missed spot-kicks, the 32 year-old was handed the responsibility in stoppage time against Poole Town to salvage a point and then repeated the feat in the next game against Hungerford Town in a 2-2 draw.

“Once the Gaffer gave me the nod, that was it, I couldn’t wait,” he said with a smile. “There’s no love lost between me and Poole Town for the way they treated Tommy Killick, so I was buzzing to step up and put that penalty away so late in the game!

“I still have a lot of love for Hungerford Town and their fantastic supporters, so it was just unfortunate that I had to score against them, but it was nice to get my side another point and double my goalscoring tally for the season in the process.

“After missing so many penalties, the Gaffer asked a few weeks ago who wanted to take the next one and when I put my hand up there was a look of sheer horror on his face, but eventually he agreed and its worked out well so far.

“I don’t think about it too much, I just hit the ball as hard as I can and make sure I get it on target.

“As a team we’ve not made the best of starts to the season, but I have faith that we’ll start to climb the table sooner rather than later. There is still plenty of football to be played and plenty of opportunities for us.

“There are a lot of big spenders in this League this season and some big clubs, so it’s a tough challenge and every point that we get has to be hard-earned. Hopefully we’ll start getting some wins soon and we can build from there.

“As a goalkeeper, clean sheets are my bread and butter; they are hard to get in this League, so I’ll aim for as many as I can. On the flip-side, in terms of goals, I’d be happy with ten this season, chuck in a few more assists to what I already have and a mid-table finish and its happy days!”

A home encounter with Walton & Hersham awaits on Saturday.
