A third win in a row saw Berkhamsted reach the 40-point mark at the weekend as they remain top of the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central.
Goals in each half from Matt Bateman and Daniel Newton secured a 2-0 victory over Biggleswade FC.
“We’re in a good position as we enter a crucial time of the season,” skipper Bateman told us after netting his sixth League goal of the season at the weekend. “There are some tough games coming up amongst what is a busy schedule, but we understand the importance.
“Recent results have given us a boost; the 4-2 victory at fellow high-flyers, Flackwell Heath, was particularly sweet as we went to one of our main rivals, who are a strong side, and got the win in difficult conditions.
“To get on the scoresheet in each of the last two games is great for me; I’m on six in the League now but of course I’d like to have more, doesn’t every striker?
“I just want to keep making a contribution as we look to maintain this strong start. We knew it would be a tough challenge going into the season; it’s always hard going into the unknown but we were determined to face it head-on following relegation at the end of last season and bounce back at the first attempt.
“It’s certainly a very tight League with so many unexpected results over the course of the season so far. It’s really enjoyable and exciting to be part of, as it also is for the fans who watch.
“We might be top at the moment, but there is still a lot of work to do. Once one game passes our focus immediately turns to the next one, and that’s the way it has to be.
“The month or so ahead will be the toughest period of the season with the games coming thick and fast. As leaders, we are there to be shot at, but we will be working as hard as we can to maintain the standards that we have set ourselves so far.
“There’s a long way to go and we’ll just take it game-by-game. From a personal point of view, I want to get as many goals as possible to help us achieve our objectives.”
There are also exciting developments taking place off-the-field with construction of a new 100-seater stand getting underway at the Glencar Community Stadium.
Meanwhile, a mouth-watering trip to second-placed Real Bedford, who are one point behind with a game in hand, awaits on Saturday.
