There were two special guests amongst the crowd at Barwell’s Pitching In Southern League Premier Central encounter with Bedford Town at the weekend.
Hinckley and Bosworth MP Dr. Luke Evans was joined by The Right Honourable Stuart Andrew, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport at Kirkby Road.
The visit was organised by The Southern Football League’s main sponsor, Entain, under The Pitching In branding.
The MPs presented certificates to Barwell FC volunteers and learned about the Pitching In Volunteers Hub where clubs and prospective volunteers are brought together as well as learning about the Community Grants scheme whereby clubs can apply for grants of up to £5,000 for community projects within their area, a project that has seen over £500,000 distributed since its inception.
Barwell FC Chairman, David Laing, took the MPs on a tour of the Barwell FC site, including the indoor and outdoor bowls club, cricket club, Barwell Sports Bar as well as the main stadium.
During the tour the MPs met and talked to a variety of supporters as well as learning about the impact the installation of an artificial pitch has had, particularly with community use seven days a week.
Southern Football League Chairman, David Martin, said: “It was a really positive visit that highlighted to the local MPs the impact a club like Barwell FC has on its community and the fantastic support available to clubs through the Volunteer Hub and Community Grants made possible by Entain through the Pitching In programme.”
