EVESHAM UNITED | HIGH STANDARDS

The Division One South club may be on a long unbeaten run, but Levi Steele knows they have more to give

Despite going eight games unbeaten, during which time they have won seven and kept three clean sheets in a row to move into second place in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South table, Evesham United striker, Levi Steele, believes the team has room for improvement in its performance levels.

Steele added to his tally at the weekend by bagging the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Melksham Town.

“We’re on a good run but as a group we know that our performances have been way off for a few weeks now,” Steele admitted to us. “We did better on Saturday, but even that display was far from convincing.

“It just shows the high standards that we expect here. The important thing, though, is that despite all of this, we have continued to win matches and now we find ourselves in second place in the table.

“As a group we’ll always work hard and we’ve got that knack of being able to find a way to win, which has served us well this season.

“From a personal point of view the season has had its ups and downs. I’ve missed more matches than I would have liked through a combination of niggling injuries and suspension, for what I considered to be a very dubious red card.

“But it’s been nice to get my name on the scoresheet in each of the last two games and I am looking forward to what the run-in to the end of the season holds in store.

“From the get-go we stated that promotion was our main aim and that’s still very much the case, however, we can’t afford to let ourselves get too carried away at this stage.

“We’ve put ourselves into a strong position but we’ve got to take each game as it comes and keep pushing on.

“Top spot is in our sights but it’s going to take a lot of hard work to get there. This has always been a tough and competitive League and with budgets increasing and teams getting better all of the time, no game is easy!

“Our next challenge comes in the shape of a local derby away at Malvern Town. They have picked up some good results recently and are one of a large number of teams who fancy their chances of making the top five.

“We know that we have to step up our recent performance levels, but we’re playing with plenty of confidence and belief at the moment and that should stand us in good stead for what we know will be a tough test.”
